Jay Johnson @ The Horseman Club 10-15-04

I went down to the Horseman’s Club to see Jay, not knowing he was opening for Ray Wylie Hubbard that night.  I can’t think of a time when someone like RWH had a better opening act.  Jay’s new band is Ssssssssmokin, and he’s got his groove on.  Yes, Daddy has a brand new band. Jay has evolved and greatness has been birthed.

The music is tight, and Jay has never been better.  This is how a band is supposed to be.  His old songs come alive with this new band backing him.  It just proves that everything old is new again.  “Gumball Wedding Band” sounded great with that “Angry Jack Ingram” growl to it.  Feel my wrath, Bitch!  The new songs prove that Jay Johnson knows his business, and the band just makes it right.

Mark Lafon is a guitar god, he has been set free, and allowed to shine, Tony Taylor on drums, drives the rhythm like a B.O.O.H, Jonathan Pearce plays some hot and dirty sax, and BB likes sax.. hell, who doesn’t?  Jim Harrington on throbbing bass ties it all together.  This band is tight, with chemistry like this who needs mad scientist.  Jay has whipped these guys together and they explode onstage.

The album was good, but with the addition of the sax, the new harmonies and the thrill of being live, I’m in love, I’m in love, I’m in love, I’m in love, I’m in love Jay, but this band, has teeth!  This band rocks.  We are unworthy… As always, Jay is beer Bytch Approved, but he has even surpassed that.  Check him out for yourself. He’s been approved for your listening and viewing pleasure.
